The acclaimed filmmaker's legendary action saga, The Odyssey, is a film we've been eagerly awaiting since its announcement. It firmly sits as one of the most awaited motion pictures coming next year. As a pre-Christmas treat, a preview has now been released, even if it's compromised by YouTube's poor compression—perhaps explaining why Nolan initially kept the trailer solely for theatrical audiences.
A First Glimpse of the Stellar Ensemble
This first look showcases Matt Damon in the role of Odysseus. We also see Tom Holland as Telemachus alongside Anne Hathaway as Penelope. During an emotional scene, Penelope asks her husband to vow his safe homecoming, only for him to respond by asking what occurs should he fail. The trailer also offers a quick, obscured look of the mythical one-eyed giant, from whom sheep are Odysseus and his crew steal during their arduous journey.
Adapted from a cornerstone of Western literature, The Odyssey chronicles the lengthy quest of the legendary King of Ithaca. After his triumph at Troy, which is depicted within the companion epic, the king faces an extended and hazardous return to his homeland.
Legendary Obstacles and a Star-Studded Lineup
On his travels, the hero encounters numerous obstacles and mythical beings. This roster features the witch-goddess Circe, known for turning humans into pigs, as well as the treacherous Sirens. Regardless of these ordeals, Odysseus vows to overcome anything to get back to his wife and son on his home island.
This film's ensemble is remarkably star-studded. Joining Damon, Holland, and Hathaway is Charlize Theron as the cunning Circe, alongside Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, Elliot Page, and Jon Bernthal.
A Tale of Many Adaptations
The classic poem has seen many reinterpretations over the years. These range from modern retellings and a late-90s dance production. There has even been a stage musical adaptation titled Epic: The Musical, released in the form of a nine-album collection.
The official trailer was long awaited since the film's announcement and a short teaser clip that previously played exclusively in theaters. That teaser subsequently found its way onto the internet soon after.
